Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Sydney’s premier trainer Chris Waller now has his sights set on the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival riches with the big ones in his home state done and dusted for the autumn starting with the A.D. Hollindale Stakes 2013 at the Gold Coast this weekend where he will launch a three-pronged attack.
A key lead-up race to the Brisbane Carnival majors including the $500,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) later this month, Saturday’s $358,000 Group 2 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m) has this year drawn a final field of 13 stayers.
Heading the field with the No. 1 saddlecloth is Waller’s former Group 1 champion Danleigh who will jump from barrier 12 with Larry Cassidy in the saddle as the veteran nine-year-old backs up off three tough Group 1 races in Sydney.
Third to stablemate Shoot Out in the Chipping Norton Stakes Danleigh went on to run seventh to star colt Pierro in the George Ryder Stakes when beaten under two lengths before their last start fifth to Sacred Falls, also from the Waller stables, on a Heavy (10) Randwick track on April 20 in the Doncaster Mile.
Saturday’s distance will test the 2011 Chipping Norton Stakes winner as incredibly it will be the first time Waller tests them at greater than a mile (1600m) in their 61-start career to date.
Waller’s two other Hollindale Stakes hopefuls this year are then Dansili six-year-old Foreteller (barrier 10) with Jim Cassidy to ride and Stout Hearted drawn nicely in gate two with Nathan Berry booked.
Foreteller enjoyed an excellent summer – autumn prep in Melbourne and Sydney winning the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes over the 1800m as well as their first Group 1 victory in the Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill.
Fellow import Stout Hearted meanwhile has improvement to make failing in both their runs this time in including their last start sixth to Skeyrush in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1600m) at Randwick on April 13.
Also with multiple entries is Victoria’s leading trainer Peter Moody who will saddle-up out of form veteran Voila Ici (barrier nine) with top Queensland hoop Chris Munce in the saddle, as well as his Group 1 winning mare Lights Of Heaven.
Drawn in barrier 11 with stable ace Luke Nolen to ride, five-year-old Zabeel mare Lights Of Heaven has been back in top form of late running second two runs in in the Group 2 Sunline Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley before her nice comeback victory when carrying a hefty 58kg to victory in the Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) on Golden Slipper Day in Sydney.
The only other last-start winner is then the John Thompson-trained Commands gelding Transporter (barrier 13) who vies for their third consecutive win following a six length romp at Doomben on April 6 and then their Listed Greenslopes Members’ Handicap at Eagle Farm – both over the mile.
Thompson will also start two other hopes with Encosta De Lago six-year-old Saint Encosta and Hour Of Peril coming off a fourth to Transporter drawn in gates six and one respectively.
Other notable hopefuls in the mix then include Graeme Boyd’s nine-year-old Kiwi raider Ginga Dude, fifth to Transporter last start, and Canterbury Stakes minor placegetter Solzhenitsyn who was scratched from the Doncater Mile due to the unsuitably heavy track.
