More Strawberries Top-Weight in 2013 Silk Stocking Field

Kelso Wood’s recent stable acquisition More Strawberries will carry the 60kg top-weight in Saturday’s Silk Stocking 2013 at the Gold Coast, the former Gai Waterhouse-trained mare having suffered an early blow with a wide barrier draw for the AD Hollindale Stakes Day feature.

A nice lead-up race for fillies and mares heading towards some of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival majors including the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) at Eagle Farm in late June, the $150,000 Listed Attwood Marshall Lawyers Silk Stocking (1200m) has this year drawn a final field of 16 starters plus two emergencies.

Wearing the No. 1 saddlecloth is More Than Ready five-year-old More Strawberries who lines up for Wood for the first time since a controversial move by owner John Singleton from former trainer Waterhouse.

If More Strawberries, racing for the first time since May last year, comes out and overcomes her weight and the barrier with a big run this weekend it could open up for Singleton to send more of his horses Wood’s way after his massive blowout with Waterhouse last week.

Following More Strawberries in the Silk Stocking field and weights is then the Peter Moody-trained Karuta Queen with 58kg who has come up trumps with barrier four, Luke Nolen to ride the Not A Single Doubt mare who is out to improve on her last start 10th in the Sapphire Stakes.

The other highly-weighted chance is then the Liam Birchley-trained Choisir mare from Brisbane Whateverwhenever (56.5kg), winner of the Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield last October.

Birchley will also be represented in the Silk Stocking this year by his in-form Jet Spur four-year-old Emmalene (barrier 12) who improve don her 16th in the Sapphire to run a close second in the Listed Juanmo Stakes at Eagle Farm on April 20.

There are two horses in the line-up meanwhile that won their most recent race with the Michael Nolan-trained Miss Imagica in the extreme outside gate coming off a first-up black type at Toowoomba, and the resuming New Zealand raider Petty Cury drawn on the rails who comes off four straight wins back home including the Group 3 Darley Plate (1200m) at Ellerslie on March 2.

Other notable Silk Stocking hopefuls then include the Peter Snowden-trained Sydney visitor Detours, Juanmo Stakes third placed Pane In The Glass, John O’Shea’s returning Strategic mare Bound To Blush and local hope Skating On Ice.

The full 2013 Silk Stocking field, barriers, weights and jockeys are detailed in the table below.
