Hot Snitzel Tops Prime Minister’s Cup 2013 Field

Gerald Ryan’s last start Sydney winner Hot Snitzel will look to bring their good form to the Gold Coast this Saturday in the 2013 Prime Minister’s Cup on AD Hollindale Stakes Day.

The talented Snitzel four-year-old leads a capacity field of 16 starters plus five emergencies for this year’s $175,000 Listed Carlton Draught Prime Minister’s Cup (1300m) which is due to jump as the Gold Coast Race 7 at 3:10pm (AEST).

They will carry the 59.5kg top-weight with Brenton Avdulla in the saddle from a wide barrier 14 draw, into 10 if all emergencies come out, Hot Snitzel having carried only 56.5kg to victory last start when winning the Group 3 Sebring Stakes (1200m) by two and a half lengths at Rosehill on April 6.

The multiple Group winner has an outstanding record in the sunshine state having thrived in Queensland as a juvenile back in 2011 winning a Listed race at the Gold Coast by six and a half lengths on this day two years ago.

From there they went on to run top three in three Group races in Brisbane including a three length win in the Group 2 Sires Produce (1400m) and their second in the Group 1 TJ Smith (1600m) – Ryan hoping they can reproduce that form this winter.

Along with Hot Snitzel the other major last start winner in the Prime Minister’s Cup field this year is the Noel Mayfield-Smith trained Famous Seamus who has come up trump with barrier three and Glen Colless to ride.

The Elusive City four-year-old enjoyed their sixth career win on April 20 at Eagle Farm beating home a similar field of rivals in the Listed Hinkler Handicap (1200m), an effort they will be looking to reproduce on the glitter strip.

Also coming via the Hinkler Handicap are the likes of the now Brent Stanley-trained God’s Own gelding Utah Saints (2nd), formerly with Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra, and Sunshine Coast galloper River Lad (3rd).

Prior to their Hinkler Handicap run Top Echelon five-year-old River Lad enjoyed back-to-back March wins firstly in the Carbine Club Gold Coast Stakes and then at Eagle Farm in the Listed Bribie Handicap – both over the 1200m.

Other highly-weighted PM Cup chances meanwhile are the likes of former Hong Kong champion Happy Zero (58.5kg) and Phelan Ready (57kg) who hasn’t won a race since the 2009 Golden Slipper.

Other notable hopes in the mix then include Pat Duff’s Bribie Handicap fourth placed Steel Zip and local Danbird four-year-old Morning Captain last seen winning at Eagle Farm back in January.
