Express Power Eyes Queensland Oaks 2013 Start

Broadmeadow-based trainer Kris Lees is confident his decision to bypass the ATC Australian Oaks with his smart Snitzel filly Express Power will prove a winning move as he prepares the three-year-old for the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival’s 2013 Queensland Oaks next month.

The consistent three-year-old has missed a place just once in her eight starts to date which have produced a trio of victories and four minor placings.

Her most recent win came at Canterbury in late March over 1550m after which she went to the big city for the first time at Royal Randwick on April 13 to run an eye-catching second behind Royal Descent in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m).

The Adrian Knox effort was an impressive one from the up-and-comer as Express Power saw the 2000m for the first time having only ever raced up to a mile (1600m) before that and also had to jump from the wide barrier 12 of 13.

Lees considered backing the filly up in the $550,000 Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) back at the track the following Saturday but opted not to over-tax her instead saving Express Power for a trip to Queensland later in the season.

There is little doubt she would have performed well in the big Sydney Group 1 however as the Adrian Knox form held strong with the Chris Waller-trained Royal Descent scoring an emphatic 10 length victory over Dear Demi thriving in the muddy conditions on the day.

Due to travel to the sunshine state shortly Express Power will likely follow the traditional path into the $400,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) which runs at Eagle Farm Racecourse on June 1.

Official Queensland Oaks 2013 nominations, as well as those for all the other Brisbane Group 1’s this season excluding the Tattersall’s Tiara, are due for release later today so stay tuned.
