2013 Queensland Oaks Nominations Feature 69 Fillies

The number of three-year-old fillies heading towards the Queensland Oaks 2013 at Eagle Farm Racecourse on Saturday June 1 is down 18 on last year with 69 hopefuls entered for the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival classic.

Dear Demi

Won 12 months ago by the John Sargent-trained New Zealander Quintesential who went on to run a brave second to Brambles up against the boys in the Queensland Derby, the $400,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) is again shaping up as a nice race.

As always there are plenty of interstate raiders out to steal the show from the locals including the Anthony Freedman-trained Kazanluk coming off a fourth in a Morphettville Group 3 and Kris Lees’ Snitzel filly Express Power.

Express Power was saved from the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) a week after her brave second to subsequent Australian Oaks winner Royal Descent in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on April 13 instead being saved for the Queensland Oaks.

There are a number of Queensland Oaks hopes that did run in the Sydney feature however including the Clarry Conners-trained runner-up Dear Demi who won the Crown Oaks last spring, and third placed Gondokoro from the stables of Pat Carey.

Zabeel filly Gondokoro also ran a good fourth in the Group 1 Storm Queen Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on Golden Slipper Day.

Storm Queen Stakes runner-up Longport is also nominated for the Queensland Oaks, John Thompson’s daughter of Casino Prince last seen running fifth in the ATC Oaks on a Heavy rated track.

Also in the mix is the Michael Moroney-trained Zabeel filly La Zuma who improved on her 10th in the Auraria Stakes at in Adelaide two back to finish third behind Maybe Discreet and Grand Daughter in the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) last Saturday.

Some of the other notable Queensland Oaks nominations this year include last start Listed winner at Eagle Farm over the mile Fantisha, runner-up in the same race Catalonia and the Kevin Moses-trained Medusa’s Miss.

Below is the full list of 2013 Queensland Oaks entries.
