2013 Queensland Derby Nominations Released

A big nominations list featuring some already proven talents and plenty of unknown gallopers has been released for the Group 1 2013 Queensland Derby (2400m).

Queensland’s number one three-year-old race will take place at Eagle Farm on June 8 and it has attracted 120 initial nominations.

Among the most high profile is Clarry Connners-trained filly Dear Demi who won the Crown Oaks during the spring and was runner-up behind Royal Descent in this year’s Australian Oaks.

There is generally a strong New Zealand presence at the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival and one of the top nominations for the $500,000 staying feature is Survived.

The John Bary-trained gelding has tasted defeat just twice from seven career starts and is unbeaten since beginning his most recent campaign in February.

The exciting Kiwi stayer is already proven over a staying trip, taking out the 2200m Gold Cup at Hastings at his most recent start.

Also already proven over plenty of ground is Hippopus who Gai Waterhouse elected to bypass the South Australian Derby with in order to focus on a winter carnival assault.

The High Chaparral colt was fifth in the Australian Derby before winning the Listed VRC St Leger (2800m) by 3 1/2 lengths.

New Zealand trainer Murray Baker made the headlines with star colt It’s A Dundeel at the Sydney carnival and he has entered Ambitious Champion and Usainity for the Queensland Derby.

Ambitious Champion has won his two most recent starts in New Zealand while Usainity won the Group 2 Frank Packer Plate on Australian debut at Randwick on Saturday.

One of the best local hopes is Eagle Farm-based Carmora who has won three of five starts since debuting in February.
