Sizzling Kicks Off Stradbroke Campaign – 2013 Gold Coast Guineas Nominations

Classy Queensland colt Sizzling will kick off a 2013 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) campaign when he starts as one of the favourites in Saturday’s Group 3 2013 Gold Coast Guineas (1400m).

The winner of six of 11 starts is the top rated horse of 34 nominated for Saturday’s $125,000 feature which will be his first outing since running second in the Magic Millions Guineas.

Trainer Kelso Wood is hoping his stable star is primed to repeat his winter carnival success of last year where he was unbeaten in the state’s best two-year-old races.

Wood will keep the three-year-old to his own age group until the Stradbroke on June 8 where he will take on a quality line up vying for a $1 million winner’s cheque.

“I’ve spoken to the handicappers and they assure me he’ll get a run in the Stradbroke,” Wood said.

Among his likely rivals this weekend is Saluter who beat Sizzling to claim the Magic Millions Guineas.

It was by far the biggest result of the Jason McLachlan-trained gelding’s career.

Saluter is yet to taste black-type success but is likely to get plenty of chances in three-year-old races throughout the winter.

Returning to Queensland after strong results behind Sizzling as a two-year-old is Darley-owned gelding Academus who was last seen winning the WA Guineas in November.

Another making a return trip to the winter carnival is Sydney gelding Dances On Stars who finished third behind Sizzling and Academus in both the Champagne Classic and the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes.

Others in Gold Coast Guineas nominations include Mick Dittman Plate runner-up Rocky King, 2012 Golden Slipper fourth Doubtfilly and Patinack-owned pair Reflectance and Sookie.
