Second Effort Chasing Second Title – 2013 Wangoom Handicap Field

Clinton McDonald’s six-year-old sprinter Second Effort will carry the topweight of 58.5kg in Wednesday’s Listed $150,000 2013 Wangoom Handicap (1200m) which takes place as part of Warrnambool’s exciting three-day carnival.

Second Effort is chasing his second consecutive Wangoom title after edging out Darren Weir’s talented mare Wealth Princess last year.

The Mossman gelding backed up that success in the early spring to win at Group 2 level in the PB Lawrence Stakes but is yet to rediscover that form this autumn.

Second Effort was nine lengths last in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes first-up before beating just one runner home in the Sebring Stakes.

Out to avenge last year’s result will be Wealth Princess who will have to overcome the early obstacle of a barrier 19 draw.

A winner of seven of 15 starts, Wealth Princess hasn’t been seen since she finished 17th in the Stradbroke Handicap at last year’s Brisbane winter carnival.

The San Luis seven-year-old has faced plenty of injury problems throughout her career but was second in the Group 1 Winter Stakes in 2010 and won the Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes last year.

Stepping out for Leon Corstens is Tokugawa who has won four of 12 starts and is likely to start among the favourites on Wednesday.

Also among the top chances is That’s The One who was strong first-up when finishing runner-up in a handicap at Flemington on April 13.

David Bourne’s four-year-old Zamorar struggled first-up but is a consistent galloper and has won for times and placed another seven from 14 starts.

Others in the Wangoom Handicap field include Peter Moody’s Dayita and Michael O’Leary’s seven-year-old Glaneuse.
