Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
One of the key support races at Morphettville’s South Australian Derby Day this Saturday will be the 2013 Adelaide Guineas for those three-year-olds not quite capable of running out the 2500m of the meeting’s $5000 Group 1 SA Derby.
Worth $80,000 in prize money, the Listed Adelaide Guineas is run over a mile (1600m) and has this year attracted 19 nominations.
There are a number of last start winners in the mix this year including the Mick Price-trained Victorian visitors General Peekay and Hunger.
Nicely bred General Nediym gelding General Peekay comes off two good runs at Morphettville when second in the Veloia Handicap before relishing the step up to 1400m to narrowly beat home Couldn’t Agreemore in the Listed HC Nitschke Stakes on April 20.
Runner-up there, Phillip Stoke’s exciting local hope Couldn’t Agreemore, also backs up in the Adelaide Guineas seeing the 1600m for the first time like the majority of the nominees.
HC Nitschke Stakes fourth placed Essay Raider is another Adelaide Guineas hope, the Bernardini gelding having been narrowly defeated three back when second to Lonhspresso in the Group 2 Centrebet Classic (1200m) at the track.
Price’s other hopeful is then Snitzel gelding Hunger who narrowly held off their rivals to win an 1800m handicap at Caulfield on April 20, the drop back to 1600m on Saturday to suit.
Other notable chances then include the Anthony Freedman-trained Red Ransom filly Kazanluk coming off a close fourth to Global Balance in the Group 3 Schweppervescence Stakes (1800m) at the track earlier in the month, Group 1 performer in Melbourne last spring Stella Lante and Robert Smerdon’s progressive Fastnet Rock gelding Electric Fusion.
