Belle Couture, a half-sister to the recently retired super mare Black Caviar, enters trainer Danny O’Brien’s Flemington stable this week as the racing world eagerly awaits the race debut of the $2.6 million yearling.
Sadly fans around the world said goodbye to turf queen Black Caviar this month as she bowed out of racing with a flawless 25 from 25 record, but the legend will continue through her relations including the BC 3 Thoroughbred-owned Belle Couture.
The Redoute’s Choice filly, who has been in pre-training at Geelong with Kevin Newby, certainly has big shoes to fill not only sharing a mother (Desert Sun mare Helsinge) with $7.9 million earner Black Caviar but also with Casino Prince colt All Too Hard.
The Hawkes-trained All Too Hard ran their final race down under over the weekend posting a sensational victory in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) which was their fourth Group 1 assignment, the galloper a possibility for Royal Ascot mid-year before retiring to serve as a stallion at Vinery Stud.
So can the impeccably-bred Belle Couture emulate the success of her famous half-siblings?
Only time will tell whether the hefty outlay by connections at the 2012 Inglis Sydney Easter Yearling Sale for the nice looking bay filly will pay off but at this stage all the signs are positive heading into her maiden race campaign which hasn’t been rushed.
“Slowly but surely she has told us she wasn’t in any rush to be pushed and we’ve just followed her lead,” BC 3 Thoroughbred’s Sales and Industry Liaison Manager Simon Marshall said of the filly who arrived at O’Brien’s on Tuesday.
“She can get in there and have a full experience in the stable and can get to know she is a racehorse.”
“She’s grown out to be a lovely, big girl and a very good size like her mother.”
At this stage owners are looking at a race around June or July in Victoria during the iconic Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival for the debut run from Belle Couture.
“There are a number races that we’ll put on the table but at this stage she’s just got to have a good experience and get a full preparation under her belt and we’ll go from there,” Marshall said.
“The beginning starts now and she’s ready to go.”
