The lucrative $500,000 Group 1 Centrebet South Australian Derby (2500m) is scheduled to run as Morphettville Race 7 at 3:35pm (local time) and is shaping up as a top clash with a strong line-up of both local and interstate hopefuls in the mix.

Peter Gelagotis’ Fastnet Rock colt Hvasstan is the top-rated of the SA Derby acceptors this weekend, the Moe-based galloper with work to do in gate 11 with Glen Boss to ride.

Winner of the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley last month Hvasstan has been well beaten in their two most recent runs when 7th and 6th to It’s A Dundeel in the Rosehill Guineas and Australian Derby respectively.

They should however be better able to handle the class of rivals in Adelaide and if they can reproduce their earlier season form should be right up there in the finish.

The next highest-rated runner is then Richard Jolly’s local Strada gelding Hioctdane who came up with the extreme outside barrier 15 of 15.

Fourth in the Adelaide Guineas on April 13 Hioctdane thrived over the 2000m last Saturday when scoring an emphatic 4.5 length victory over Pharomac in the Group 3 Chairman’s Veolia Stakes at the track – an effort they will be out to reproduce just seven days later in the Derby.

Despite the awkward gate Hioctdane is still likely to start one of the top fancies in the SA Derby odds after their last start victory.

Also coming off a run in the Chairman’s Veolia Stakes is third placegetter Pins Of Pele for Victorian horseman Anthony Freedman.

There are then two other last start winners vying for successive wins on Saturday with the lightly raced David Hayes-trained High Chaparral colt Packing Empire (barrier 12) who broke their maiden status at start number three on April 20 with an easy 6.5 length victory at Bendigo over the mile and a half, and Saab Hasan’s progressive Shoreham.

Drawn ideally in gate three with Chris Symons to ride, Reset gelding Shoreham has been in flying form over the past month overcoming bad gates to run top three at Caulfield twice in March before going to Flemington on April 13 in the Listed Galilee Series Final over the SA Derby distance (2500m) to win by 3.5 lengths over a smart field including Bel Thor (2nd), Green Roller (3rd) and McNulty (4th).

Runner-up in that race Bel Thor and fourth placed McNutly are also in the SA Derby field this weekend.

Gold’s Own gelding Bel Thor however failed at their first run in Adelaide last Saturday when beaten 12.5 lengths by Hioctdane, while the Michael Kent-trained McNulty did better on Anzac Day to run second to Hippopus in the Listed VRC St Leger (2800m) the genuine stayer set for the drop back to 2500m.

The official 2013 South Australian Derby field, barriers, jockeys and weights are detailed in the table below.
