Rarefied Wins Last on 2013 Sydney Cup Day – Hall Mark Stakes Results

Rarefied has finished off a successful Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival for Darley and their head trainer Peter Snowden winning the last of the festival on Sydney Cup Day with a gritty effort in the $100,000 Listed Cellarbrations Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick.

The Commands six-year-old was second-up in the Hall Mark Stakes after a lengthy spell of over a year having suffered a nasty tendon injury at the end of 2011.

After a first-up fourth to Hot Snitzel in the Group 3 Sebring Stakes (1200m) on Golden Slipper Day the comeback gelding was back in the winners’ stall for the first time since August of 2009 handing Darley the Hall Mark Stakes quinella with their victory over stablemate Skytrain.

Joe Pride’s Title was one of the best out of the gates and showed early speed to run in front, a position they maintained until the final few hundred metres.

On the straight Rarefied was pushed out into the clear by Kerrin McEvoy who earlier saluted in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) with Snowden’s smart filly Guelph.

Lonhro seven-year-old Skytrain, winner of the Southern Cross Stakes before their below par ninth in the Sebring Stakes, went up with their stablemate over the final stages and the two Snowden-trained gallopers battled it out stride for stride.

Rarefied surged forward late however to snare the final race of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival wrapping things up in a thrilling finish.

It was a big run from the runner-up Skytrain who was back on the rail and had work to do to get into second just ahead of Pride’s other runner See The World, third in the Sebring last start, in a photo for the minor placings.

Snowden had the winner cherry ripe, and that plus the gun ride from McEvoy who gave them a lovely run in transit before pulling them out at exactly the right time, saw Rarefied in a win that indicated better things to come.

“Very satisfying with this bloke as he comes off a tendon injury,” Snowden said after the win.

“For anyone that’s had a tendon injury it’s so hard to get them back…so full credit to the team.

“It’s been a long six weeks (for the Carnival) but it’s been a very rewarding one.”

McEvoy praised not only Snowden and his team but also the horse for today’s big Sydney Cup Day comeback.

“This guy’s done a fantastic job,” he said.

“Credit to Peter and the team, he’s had a few little injuries but he’s a great old warhorse.”

While the Sydney autumn features may be over for another year there’s still plenty of Group 1 racing action to come in Adelaide with The Goodwood and then onto Brisbane for the winter.
