Pierro to Stand at Coolmore

Sydney’s superstar colt Pierro has been sold to international breeding operation Coolmore in a rumoured $35 million deal.

Coolmore’s Michael Kirwan announced the news late on Friday, clearly excited about the latest addition to their stallion ranks.

“We’ve followed Pierro’s career very closely ever since he made his debut and we’re thrilled that he is joining what is already an exceptional line up of stallions here at Coolmore Australia,” Kirwan said.

The deal came just six days after the five-time Group 1 winner boxed on for a gallant second carrying 57kg in the Doncaster Mile.

Kirwan pointed to Pierro’s terrific two-year-old record as well as his ability to back up the following season as reasons to be particularly excited about the purchase.

“He was a truly brilliant two-year-old equally effective at all distances from 1000 to 1600m. No other horse since 1970 has managed to secure the two-year-old Triple Crown while remaining undefeated through his first season,” he said.

Owner Greg Kolivos will retain a small interest after watching the son of Lonhro score 11 wins from 14 starts and collect more than $4.5 million in prizemoney.

“He is a champion in every sense of the word and we are now very much looking forward to a new, exciting chapter in his career,” Kolivos said.

The service fee for Pierro is yet to be announced but a guide could be fellow star colt All Too Hard who will stand for $66,000 at Vinery.

On the track Pierro achieved astonishing feats, winning Sydney’s two-year-old triple crown and going undefeated in his first eight starts.

He never finished worse than third and major career wins included the Golden Slipper, the Sires’ Produce Stakes, the Champagne Stakes, the Canterbury Stakes and the George Ryder Stakes.

Pierro may have finished racing but there are some genuine stars on show at Randwick today and the best place to back a winner is bookmaker.com.au.
