Mourayan Wins 2013 Sydney Cup – Results

The marquee race at Royal Randwick this afternoon, the Sydney Cup 2013 has been won by a double figure chance with the Lloyd Williams-owned import Mourayan showing their ability to stay with a runaway win in the two mile classic.

The $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m) was the winning Alhaarth seven-year-old’s third start over the distance following a seventh to stablemate Green Moon in last year’s Melbourne Cup and a third in the 2010 Sandown Cup.

Mourayan came off a good fourth to Tremec, scratched from the Sydney Cup, in the Group 2 Chairman’s Quality (2600m) which again proved the form race for the 3200m classic.

Ridden expertly by Hugh Bowman, aboard for the Chairman’s as well as their Melbourne Cup effort last spring, Mourayan got the run of the Sydney Cup and was in a lovely position fourth and then fifth on the rails with Gai Waterhouse’s former favourite Julienas leading the pack.

Julienas continued to lob along in front while Mourayan was tucked away on the rails in fifth behind the likes of Norsqui, Aliyana Tilde and the favourite Kelinni.

Over the final few hundred metres Mourayan and the patient Bowman made their move coming up hard on the outside as the early leaders faded including Julienas who dropped back to cross a distant last as they did in the Chairman’s the start before.

In the end the perfectly placed Mourayan won running away to finish three quarters of a length ahead of the Walter McShane-trained Adelaide Cup winner Norsqui with Snitzel mare Aliyana Tilde, also third in the Chairman’s, finishing off the winning Sydney Cup trifecta just a short head further away.

The one the punters wanted in the Sydney Cup was the Chris Waller-trained Kelinni who was heavily backed into $2.65 but unable to finish off eventually running sixth after never really quickening, second pick Maluckyday also disappointing never getting into the race.

Winning co-owner Nick Williams was pleased with the Sydney Cup result saying it was a great effort from the team to get Mourayan to improve on their early autumn form which saw them finish eighth in both the Futurity Stakes and Australian Cup to win their grand final here.

“We were a bit worried about how he was going earlier in the autumn,” Williams said.

“We changed a few things with him…blinkers off really sharpening him up…it’s worked a treat.

“He’s the first of the European horses we bought this time.”

Williams was also quick to credit the well-timed ride by Bowman.

“Hugh was very confident going into it,” he said.

“What a ride, you can see why he’s the best in Australia.

“He’s a great rider.”

Bowman also noticed the difference from the Chairman’s to the Sydney Cup with the changes to Mourayan’s gear and was thrilled to get a Group 1 victory on him having ridden the horse on 10 previous occasions for two wins.

“To win a big race on him means a hell of a lot,” he said.

“He travelled a bit kinder for me today without the blinkers.

“Obviously aimed him at this and he’s carried the top weight in this to win which was a huge effort.”

Punters that backed the Sydney Cup winner online at bookmaker.com.au enjoyed the best payouts, especially those lucky enough to pick the champion and the margin in their exclusive Pick Your Own Odds markets with Mourayan at $15 to win by more than half a length.
