Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Favourite for this afternoon’s Sydney Cup 2013 showdown at Royal Randwick, Kelinni has firmed in the markets following the early scratching of the in-form Tremec.
John Thompson’s progressive Zabeel four-year-old Tremec was to shoot for their third Sydney win on the trot in today’s $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m) after their good last start victory in the Group 2 Chairman’s Quality (2600m) on April 13.
With the Chairman’s Quality being the best Sydney Cup form in recent years, Tremec was one of the top fancies in the Sydney Cup odds paying $8.
His withdrawal from the field means that there will be a few punters re-doing their form and speed maps as the gelding was tipped to be one of the early frontrunners and pacesetters.
With one of the main dangers out the price on Refuse To Bend gelding Kelinni to win the Sydney Cup has firmed in from $3.20 to $2.80.
Fourth in last year’s Melbourne Cup over the two miles on a three day back-up following their Lexus Stakes victory, Kelinni certainly looks well able to handle their seven day turnaround here.
He’s a proven stayer, displayed a wonderful turn of foot with a big weight (60kg) in the mud to win the JRA Plate last weekend and is the deserved favourite.
Odds on second pick Maluckyday remain steady at $4.40 as do those for the Gai Waterhouse-trained Julienas ($8).
Julienas was the ruling Sydney Cup favourite a fortnight ago but something went amiss badly when they ran dead last in the Chairman’s crossing over 35 lengths away from Tremec.
They won a trial since in Sydney and looked fine doing that, and every horse needs to be forgiven for one run so don’t discount them completely.
Other notable market movers along with the favourite meanwhile include Mourayan ($12 into $10) and Blood Brotha ($10 into $9).
Mourayan is the veteran stayer in this field and has a good record at Randwick and over the two miles. Their fourth in the Chairman’s wasn’t bad either and is definitely worth a look-in for those Place and Exotic bets.
New Zealand raider Blood Brotha meanwhile has just their second ever run down under following a big effort to run second in the Chairman’s as a $100 outsider.
Dual winner over the two miles including in the NZ Cup last November by six and a half so why not take them Each Way?
