Today’s Royal Randwick race meet for Sydney Cup Day 2013 features eight black type events including four Group 1 headliners making for an elite day’s racing and punting to finish off the Sydney Autumn Carnival.
Earlier we published our exclusive Sydney Cup Day Tips 2013 featuring our trifecta selections for all the events running at Randwick from 12:25pm (AEST) today.
To spice things up and give you an even better chance of finishing in the money today below we take a closer look at some of the major races and provide you with a few different tips for today – the roughies to back for value, the favourites to sack, horses worth a crack, and the best at the track!
In The Big One – Race 6 – Sydney Cup
#4 Kelinni ($2.80)
Earlier in the week our top tip for the $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m) was the John Thompson-trained Tremec who was paying a nice $8 to back up from their Chairman’s Quality victory with another staying success here. Tremec was scratched from the Sydney Cup 2013 field this morning however and we are going back to the firming favourite. Chris Waller’s import Kelinni is definitely the one the punters want having been backed in from $3 to $2.80 and it’s easy to see why. They have proven form over the two miles when fourth in the Melbourne Cup, won at the track in the mud carrying more weight last Saturday, can handle a short back-up and have a turn of foot that will get them home here.
Best Place Bet – Race 1 – Frank Packer Plate
#7 Sir Denzel ($26)
While there is no doubt Toydini ($1.50) is the one to beat in the Sydney Cup Day opener with Guy Walter’s flying three-year-old after their third Group win on the trot in the $125,000 Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) there’s still value to be had in the first with Sir Denzel at their double figures. Glyn Schofield rides this John O’Shea-trained Savabeel gelding who we are tipping for improvement after their credible third last start over this distance at Rosehill on Golden Slipper Day behind Philippi in the Tulloch Stakes. Right distance, Randwick should suit, they will be the fresh horse here after a three week break and ready to surprise.
Better Than Bank Interest – Race 4 – Queen Elizabeth Stakes
#9 It’s A Dundeel ($1.40)
And it really is, a done deal that is. This year’s $500,000 Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) really does look to be Murray Baker’s star New Zealand colt It’s A Dundeel’s for the taking. The talented High Chaparral three-year-old is already a four time Group 1 champ down under, has won eight from 11 in total, and comes off a trio of elite levels in Sydney having completed the triple crown with ridiculous ease last time out in the Australian Derby putting six lengths on their closest rival. Go back in distance but don’t worry, the rest won’t be too sharp for this turf great in the making.
Best Roughie Of The Day – Race 7 – All Aged Stakes
#8 Epaulette ($4.20)
While $4.20 might not seem like a ‘roughie’ to many, in the $400,000 Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) this afternoon that is a nice price for the win with two others shorter than Peter Snowden’s classy Commands colt in the markets. Multiple Group 1 winning mare More Joyous ($2.60) is tipped as the one to beat here after her luckless fifth after getting boxed in in the Queen Of The Turf last start. She is then followed by Black Caviar’s half-brother All Too Hard ($3) who won the Futurity Stakes – CF Orr Stakes double in Melbourne back in February. But for us Epaulette is the value bet of the day. Third in the Caulfield Guineas behind All Too Hard during the spring they are tipped to improve getting a Sydney track this time and were far from disgraced when best of the rest crossing three lengths off Black Caviar first-up in the TJ Smith Stakes last time out.
