Seven Horse 2013 Victory Stakes Field Named

Queensland’s gun sprinter Buffering heads a small but quality field for Saturday’s Group 2 2013 Victory Stakes (1200m) at Doomben.

In a preview to the 2013 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, Buffering will be out to get his campaign off to a flyer ahead of his attempt to claim an elusive Group 1 victory.

Trainer Robert Heathcote is likely to prepare his stable star for a tilt down the usual Queensland winter path, consisting of the Group 1 BTC Cup, Doomben 10,000 and Stradbroke Handicap.

Heathcote said earlier this week Buffering is raring to go after a long spell following the spring carnival.

“He’s fresh because he’s had the longest break of his racing life,” Heathcote said.

Among the horses out to knock off the defending victory stakes champion are Tony Gollan-trained trio Spirit Of Boom, Temple Of Boom and Listen Son.

Spirit Of Boom and Temple Of Boom have already been seen in southern autumn races while Listen Son is running first-up.

Temple Of Boom is the only Group 1 winner in the race but hasn’t seen success since the 2012 Galaxy.

Also trying to break a lengthy drought is Spirit Of Boom who was last seen passing the post first in January last year.

But the big five-year-old has produced some quality performances on the big stage, placing several times during the spring and running third in the Oakleigh Plate in February.

While Queenslanders dominate the field, Peter Moody’s consistent sprinter Ready To Rip will make the trip north as will Darley’s Group 1 placegetter Albrecht.

The other runner in the field is local gelding Startsmeup who will be stepping out for new trainers John Meagher and sons Daniel and Christopher for the first time.
