Kelinni Leads Sydney Cup Field 2013

Chris Waller’s in-form JRA Plate winner Kelinni leads a smart field of autumn stayers engaged to face off in the marquee Royal Randwick race this Saturday, the 2013 Sydney Cup to take centre stage in the final Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival meet of the season.

Scheduled as Randwick Race 6 at 3:35pm (AEST) the $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m) is one of the last remaining two mile cup showdowns in Australia and has this year drawn a final field of 11 hopefuls.

Clear favourite in the pre-field Sydney Cup odds has been Refuse To Bend five-year-old Kelinni, fourth in last spring’s iconic Melbourne Cup over the two miles on the back of a Lexus Stakes victory just three days earlier.

This season Kelinni has again proved their staying prowess and potential Group 1 winning form with a good fourth to Fiveandahalfstar in the Group 1 The BMW (2500m) followed by their explosive effort carrying 60kg to victory in last weekend’s JRA Plate over 2000m in the mud.

On Saturday Kelinni goes back up in distance, something they can easily handle, and will relish the drop back from 60kg to 57kg when Hall of Famer Jim Cassidy takes the saddle from barrier seven.

Equal top-weights in this year’s Sydney Cup field are then the Robert Hickmott-trained Mourayan and last year’s Sydney Cup winner Niwot both on 58kg.

Mourayan (barrier two, Hugh Bowman), winner of the Group 3 Craven Plate back in October, comes off a promising fourth to Tremec in the Group 2 Chairman’s Quality (2600m) at the track on April 13 when carrying 58.5kg – Tremec had just 53kg.

Rising eight-year-old Galileo gelding Niwot meanwhile won last year’s Sydney Cup at the end of a stellar autumn that included two fourth place finishes at elite level behind Manighar in both the Ranvet Stakes and The BMW.

Their form this time in has been anything but encouraging however with the veteran last seen running a distant 10th in The BMW and they must also carry far more than the 55.5kg they had on their back to take out last year’s Sydney Cup.

The Hawkes have also accepted for Maluckyday who is considered the second best chance in the Sydney Cup markets behind Kelinni.

Drawn on the rails with barrier one, Dwayne Dunn to ride, the Zabeel six-year-old was third in this year’s Ranvet Stakes before their sixth when crossing only one and a half lengths behind the winner in The BMW on April 6.

Runner-up in the 2010 Melbourne Cup Maluckyday is proven over this distance, gets the run of the race form the inside alley, should be ready to improve off their good lead-up run and gets in with 56.5kg – a nice drop back from their 59kg in The BMW.

Other notable Sydney Cup 2013 hopes then include the Gai Waterhouse-trained Julienas who will carry 57.5kg after receiving a 1.5kg penalty for their NE Manion Cup win before a shock dead last finish in the Chairman’s, New Zealand Cup winner Blood Brotha drawn nicely in gate three coming off an excellent Chairman’s second, Chairman’s third placed mare Aliyana Tilde and the Chairman’s winner Tremec after their third on the trot having also won the Randwick City Stakes last month.

The full 2013 Schweppes Sydney Cup field, barriers, jockeys and weights are detailed in the table below.
