Exciting Sydney filly Snitzerland has opened the odds-on favourite to take out her maiden Group 1 trophy when she takes on a smart field of sprinters in the Robert Sangster Stakes 2013 in Adelaide on Saturday.
One of the richest and most prestigious races on the annual Morphettville Racecourse calendar the $400,000 Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) has this year drawn a final field of 12 fillies and mares.
Topping the Robert Sangster Stakes odds is Snitzel filly Snitzerland, drawn nicely in gate two with Corey Brown travelling to South Australia for the ride, at a quote of $1.60.
Saturday will be her fifth Group 1 assignment, her most recent effort at elite level being her last start second behind the sensational Bel Sprinter in The Galaxy at Rosehill on March 30 – Bel Sprinter further enhancing that form going on to run third to Black Caviar in the TJ Smith Stakes.
Only two of Snitzerland’s Robert Sangster Stakes rivals are under $10 in the latest bookmaker.com.au markets with Platelet and Avoid Lightning both paying $9.
Darren Weir’s Strategtic mare from Ballarat Platelet has a super consistent record with five wins and 10 minor placings from 17 starts including her devastatingly close second behind Kulgrinda in the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville last start on April 13.
Avoid Lightning meanwhile is one of only three locally-trained Robert Sangster Stakes starters this year, the David Jolly-trained Blevic four-year-old coming off a number of excellent autumn runs.
Winner of the Listed WJ Adams Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield in February Avoid Lightning was last seen running third in the RN Irwin Stakes after jumping from a horror gate 13 of 16 draw, barrier three to suit her much better on Saturday.
Other longer-priced hopefuls representing good value in the Robert Sangster Stakes betting markets then include RN Irwin Stakes winner Kulgrinda ($11) out to hand Victorian trainer Peter Moody with back-to-back wins in the race following the success of the undefeated champion Black Caviar 12 months ago, Robert Smerdon’s fellow Victorian visitor Shamal Wind ($11) and last start Moonee Valley winner Angelic Light ($13) drawn nicely in barrier two.
