Due to run as Morphettville Race 5 at 2:35pm, this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) has drawn a final field of 12 sprinters.

Also known as the Sportingbet Classic the race features a quality line-up of both local and interstate hopes although none as impressive as last year’s superstar winner Black Caviar.

Peter Moody’s turf genius may have been retired last week but the ace Victorian trainer will still be well represented in South Australia this weekend vying for back-to-back Robert Sangster Stakes wins with his smart mare Kulgrinda.

Suffering an early blow with the extreme outside barrier Exceed And Excel five-year-old Kulgrinda comes off a last start victory at the track having narrowly taken out the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) here second-up on April 13.

The short-distance specialist will be having her first Group 1 start since her dead last finish behind Sepoy in the 2011 Manikato Stakes which was also her only run over further than 1100m in her 23 starts so far.

Also coming via the RN Irwin Stakes are then runner-up Platelet and third placed Avoid Lightning.

Another Victorian visitor Darren Weir’s four-year-old Stragegic mare Platelet is a consistent performer that has finished out of the money in just two of her 17 runs to date.

While her RN Irwin jockey Ben Melham retains the ride she will have work today from gate 11 this time after getting a gun run from barrier four last start.

Avoid Lightning meanwhile is best of the three locally-trained hopes and perhaps the one to beat too after the David Jolly-trained Blevic mare drew ideally in barrier three for the Robert Sangster.

A super consistent campaign has led her into this including a Listed win at Caulfield in February, a close second to Riziz in the Oakbank Stakes last month and her close third in the RN Irwin.

Last start she had to contend from gate 13 of 16 and she will get every chance to turn the tables on the two that beat her home in that with her far more favourable barrier for Saturday.

If successful Avoid Lightning will be the first South Australian-trained mare to win the Robert Sangster Stakes (Sportingbet Classic) since John Hall’s Umaline back in 2001.

The two other last-start winners in the mix are then then another local with the Phillip Stokes-trained Just Discreet and Robbie Griffiths’ stakes performing Holy Roman Emperor filly Angelic Light who have both also drawn ideally with gates four and two respectively.

Exceed And Excel four-year-old Just Discreet enjoyed a good first-up win at Morphettville Parks on March 23 winning the Listed Matrice Stakes (1300m) and always runs well fresh so should be ready to go after a four week break.

The big name entry in the race however is the Gerald Ryan-trained Snitzerland out to break her Group 1 maiden status from barrier five with Corey Brown in the saddle.

Runner-up to Pierro in last year’s Golden Slipper the Snitzel filly enjoyed a record breaking first-up win in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) at Warwick Farm last month before her game third to Bel Sprinter in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill, Snitzerland sure to appreciate the step back in class here.

Notable omissions from nomination to acceptance stage for the Sportingbet Classic meanwhile include international performer Ortensia, and the Chris Waller-trained Arinosa who will instead vie for her third Group win on the trot when she contests Sydney’s $400,000 Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1200m) on Saturday coming up against superstars All Too Hard and More Joyous.
