Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Perth gelding Luckygray will relocate to Robert Smerdon’s Caulfield stables in an effort to chase success at the 2013 Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
Connections were pleased with the work of Gino Poletti who prepared the grey for two Group 1 wins but are serious about chasing east-coast glory this spring.
They believe a permanent Melbourne base will allow the five-year-old to show his best on the big stage.
Luckygray has started four times in Melbourne but has thus far been unable to crack a top three finish.
Smerdon told Racing Victoria he is pleased with the stable’s latest acquisition and is looking forward to finding suitable races for the talented grey.
“While the focus will turn to the major races with him, you don’t have to be in a Caulfield Cup to be running for good money in the Spring,” Smerdon said.
“There are a lot of options for a horse like him who is in that middle distance catergory which is catered for pretty well.”
Luckygray has won 12 of 20 starts and in doing so has collected more than $1.8 million in prizemoney.
Part-owner Robert Drage said they would leave his programming up to Smerdon but is hopeful the Bradbury’s Luck gelding can be competitive over 2000m.
“He wasn’t in suitable races last time over there. I think he could get up to 2000m now,” Drage said.
“If he shows promise, he’ll stay there, but if he doesn’t, he’ll come home.
“We didn’t want to take him off Gino but we feel like he can do better if he’s based over there.”
Luckygray might not be in action for a while but there is an all-star cast competing at Randwick on Saturday and sensational odds can be found at bookmaker.com.au.
