Long John Leads Anzac Day Stakes 2013 Field

On Thursday the traditional Anzac Day racing will take place at Flemington featuring two Listed features the first of which is the 2013 Anzac Day Stakes for three-year-olds where the Peter Snowden-trained Long John will look to retain their unbeaten status.

Set to kick the race meet off at 1:00pm (AEST) as Flemington Race 1 this year’s $120,000 Listed Anzac Day Stakes (1410m) has attracted a final field of 12 hopefuls, the likely favourite being No. 1 Long John.

Snowden’s Street Cry gelding is the deserving 59kg topweight having won both of their opening career starts so far.

On debut they carried 58.5kg to victory over 1300m at Bendigo on a Slow (6) track before backing up 13 days later to put an easy four lengths on their closest rival at Sandown in a two-year-old handicap over the same distance but this time carrying 59kg from barrier 11 of 11.

Thursday they should get a gun run drawn in gate four with Steve Arnold retaining the ride, the progressive juvenile more than capable of scoring their third on the trot.

The only other Anzac Day Stakes hopeful with a previous win under their belt is then the Tony McEvoy-trained Tikitour who will carry the second heaviest weight of 57kg.

The Adelaide raider has work to do here from a double digit barrier 11 draw, the race also their first look at a distance greater than 1200m.

After running a close third in the Adelaide Magic Millions 2YO Classic at their second career start last month the Dane Shadow gelding was last seen winning over 1100m at Gawler, their Magic Millions jockey Glen Boss back in the saddle for Anzac Day as they look to post back-to-back victories.

The other big name player in the classic is then the Peter Moody-trained Crime Fighter (56.5kg) who is positioned to get the run of the race from the inside alley.

The Street Hero gelding has had four starts to date but remains a maiden, something Moody is hoping will change as they step up in distance on Thursday.

Also in the mix are the likes of Mick Price’s Snitzel gelding Jayhawk, the Danny O’Brien-trained Lonhro colt Australian Venture having just their second career start after a third on debut at Sale earlier this month, and Clinton McDonald’s debutant Lucky Ol’ Sun.
