2013 Doomben 10,000 Considered for More Joyous

Despite speculation Gai Waterhouse’s glamour mare More Joyous would join the likes of Black Caviar and Pierro and head off into retirement after her Sydney Cup Day run this weekend, connections of the eight-time Group 1 champion have indicated she could race on and contest the Doomben 10,000 in Brisbane this winter.

The Australian racing world has lost a number of its turf stars to breeding careers this season and rumours have been rife six-year-old More Than Ready mare More Joyous will be the next following her showdown with All Too Hard, set to retire to stud this year, in Saturday’s $400,000 Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick.

Kick starting the speculation More Joyous will be off to the breeding barn was the nomination for her to go to arguably the world’s best sprinter Frankel to be served by the undefeated European superstar.

More Joyous’ owner-breeder John Singleton’s racing manager Duncan Grimley however has said the date with Frankel was made as a precautionary measure only and that so long as the mare was free from injury and racing well she would continue to race until the end of the year.

“We have put in a nomination for More Joyous to go to Frankel but that is only if she is retired from racing,” Grimley said.

“But at this very moment, there is every chance she will race on next season.

“If we didn’t put a nomination in for Frankel and the mare was retired, then we would not have been able go to Frankel. The mating might well happen in 2014.”

If all goes to plan in the All Aged Stakes, More Joyous tipped to jump favourite ahead of Black Caviar’s in-form half-brother All Too Hard, Grimley said a Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival campaign would be considered targeting the $650,000 Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) at the end of May.
