Sydney Cup Day Nominations – Champagne Stakes 2013

Four exciting Group 1 races will take place at Randwick Racecourse this Saturday for the final major Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival meeting, one of the Sydney Cup Day majors being the 2013 Champagne Stakes for two-year-olds.

While the season’s best sprinting juveniles finished up in the Golden Slipper Stakes at the start of the month, those with staying potential have stayed in work with the $400,000 Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) a lucrative grand final.

There are 15 early entries for the Champagne Stakes this year, nominations extended until 11am (AEST) on Wednesday.

The headline nominee for the Champagne on Saturday is the Peter Snowden-trained Guelph, the Exceed And Excel filly coming off a Group 1 victory in the ATC Sires Produce Stakes over 1400m at the track on April 13.

Fourth to Overreach in the Golden Slipper, Guelph turned the tables on Gai Waterhouse’s star when overcoming barrier 13 of 13 and relishing the step up in distance to defeat Scandiva (2nd) and Overreach (3rd) in the Sires Produce.

They will now look to secure another elite level title and complete the Sires Produce – Champagne Stakes double achieved 12 months ago by Pierro, retired after their second to Sacred Falls in the Doncaster Mile, this weekend.

Sires Produce runner-up Scandiva will also back-up in the Champagne, the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes winning filly one of three nominations for trainer Anthony Cummings along with Diva Dee and Drago who was fourth in the Sires Produce.

The other more notable hopefuls out to challenge the likely odds-on favourite Guelph then include Blue Diamond Stakes runner-up Fast ‘N’ Rocking last seen crossing fifth from a bad gate in the Slipper and the David Payne-trained Sebring colt Criterion who was one further back when sixth in the world’s richest juveniles’ race.

The 2013 Champagne Stakes final field and barriers will be released on Wednesday after tomorrow’s extended nominations, all updates to be published right here at Races.com.au.
