This Saturday it’s Adelaide’s turn to host a major Group 1 autumn sprint with the 2013 Sportingbet Classic, also registered as the Robert Sangster Stakes, lighting up Morphettville Racecourse and one of the headliners in the mix is Gerald Ryan’s talented young filly Snitzerland.
Last week a total of 27 sprinters were nominated for the $400,000 Group 1 Sportingbet Classic (1200m) including a number of three-year-old fillies such as the Robert Smerdon-trained Shamal Wind and Snitzerland.
A five-time Group winner and multiple Group 1 performer, Snitzel filly Snitzerland was saved for the Robert Sangster avoiding a clash with the now retired super mare Black Caviar in the TJ Smith Stakes a fortnight ago in Sydney.
She is now gearing up for her second elite level test of the season after putting in a brave effort to cross three and a half lengths away second to Bel Sprinter, a subsequent third behind the queen in the TJ Smith, in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill on March 30.
Saturday will be Snitzerland’s first run in Adelaide but the versatile three-year-old is ready for the challenge where possible rivals include Chris Waller’s flying Sapphire Stakes winner Arinosa and globetrotting mare Ortensia.
“She will leave on Monday,” Ryan said on the weekend.
“She’s done very well. She had a couple of hit-outs during the week, one on Tuesday morning on the (Rosehill) course proper and one on Thursday working the reverse way and she went very well.”
Ryan is confident Snitzerland is spot-on for her Adelaide assignment and is hoping she can finally break her Group 1 duck with a well-deserved win, although he knows just how tough the trophy will be to take home to Sydney.
“She is going good but Group Ones are hard to win no matter where they are and she’s got two float trips to contend with as well,” he said referring to her trip from Sydney to Melbourne and then Melbourne to South Australia.
If all goes to plan and Snitzerland is competitive this weekend there is a chance she will stay on in SA and be aimed at the state’s biggest race, the $500,000 Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) back at Morphettville on May 11.
