It’s A Dundeel Tops Early Cox Plate 2013 Odds

Murray Baker’s crack colt It’s A Dundeel has been installed as the clear early favourite for this spring’s 2013 Cox Plate following their sensational autumn campaign in Sydney.

The three-year-old High Chaparral colt, winner of the Spring Champion Stakes last campaign, won three of their four assignments this time in completing the Sydney 3YO Autumn Triple Crown.

A second-up victory in the Randwick Guineas was followed by emphatic seven and six length wins respectively in the Rosehill Guineas and then the Australian Derby stamping It’s A Dundeel as the season’s best staying three-year-old.

The bookies are rating them to come on in their four-year-old campaign later in the year too and are taking no risks with the Melbourne Carnival-bound star.

Connections have named a number of the spring majors as targets for the $2 million earner including the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley in October and even the iconic $6.2 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup over the two-miles at Flemington on the first Tuesday of November.

Futures Cox Plate betting markets are currently led by It’s A Dundeel at $3.70, the horse also overtaking Puissance De Lune as the new favourite in the Melbourne Cup odds at bookmaker.com.au at a firming price of $8.

Following It’s A Dundeel in the Cox Plate 2013 odds is then Mark Kavanagh’s Australian Cup winner Super Cool at $5.50 who is the only other single-figure fancy.

Other early pre-nomination hopefuls at the top half of the all-in markets then include the sidelined Atlantic Jewel ($12) who hasn’t raced since her All Aged Stakes victory 12 months ago, The BMW winner Fiveandahalfstar ($12), talented grey Puissance De Lune ($14) and the Robert Hickmott-trained import Sea Moon ($17) who is yet to race in Australia.

Sitting just outside of the top fancies is another exciting import in $26 chance Reliable Man from the stables of Chris Waller who will be out to improve on their sixth in the George Ryder behind the now retired Pierro when they race again in this weekend’s $500,000 Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick.
