In-form Queensland mare Black Magic could be thrown into Group 1 company in the 2013 BTC Cup (1200m) at Eagle Farm on May 11.
The four-year-old scored a third consecutive win in the Listed Juanmo Stakes at Eagle Farm on Saturday, leaving trainer Bruce Brown excited about her winter prospects.
Brown said he will nominate the emerging galloper for the BTC Cup and is also looking at the Group 1 2013 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) in June.
“I’ll nominate her for the BTC Cup. Sometimes those races only attract a small field,” Brown said.
“She’s improving every run and she’ll be even better on a good track.
“At this stage I’ll set her for some of the Listed races during the winter and hopefully she can go on to the Tatt’s Tiara towards the end of the carnival.”
Black Magic beat a host of more highly-rated horses to win Saturday’s fillies and mares’ feature to claim her first black-type victory.
This preparation the daughter of Longhorn has had an impressive rise through the grades, going from a no metro wins handicap two starts back to a Listed level winner.
Black Magic has won five of 13 career starts and Brown has described her as one of the best horses he has trained.
Brisbane’s Saturday meeting was a good winter carnival warm up, with many horses pressing their claims for bigger things.
Among those were Mick Dittman Plate winner Better Than Ready and Famous Seamus who won the Hinkler Handicap.
Famous Seamus will next run in the Listed Prime Minister’s Cup at the Gold Coast on Saturday week but the Stradbroke is very much the major goal.
“His mission is the Stradbroke and he’ll have his next run in the Prime Minister’s Cup at the Gold Coast,” Trainer Norm Mayfield-Smith said.
