Bonaria Heads 2013 Queen Of The South Stakes Nominations

A big day at Morphetville this Saturday with two Group 1 races on the program and one of the key support events is the Group 2 2013 Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m).

Heading a 20-horse nominations list for the $175,000 race is Pat Hyland-trained mare Bonaria who has been in strong form.

The Redoute’s Choice four-year-old won the Group 3 Schweppervescence Trophy in March before running fourth in the Group 2 Sunline Stakes and winning an open handicap at Flemington on April 13.

Star Of Giselle began her campaign with a victory at Group 3 level in the Mannerism Stakes but will have to bounce back from a last-start fifth to Bonaria.

The Matthew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained galloper is joined in nominations by stablemate Secret Liaison.

There’s no shortage of Victorians entered for the race and leading Melbourne trainer Peter Moody has three horses nominated with Storm Burst, Plucky Belle and There’s Only One.

There’s Only One will appreciate a drop back in class after running seventh in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes while Storm Burst will have to improve off a last-start sixth at Flemington.

Plucky Bell is the form runner out of Moody’s Queen Of The South Stakes, having won the Bill Collins Handicap at Caulflield at his last start.

Darren Weir’s four-year-old Lake Sententia showed some class when second in the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes in the spring and is coming off a second at Flemington.

Others nominated for the Queen Of South Stakes include local hope Danish Spy and Robbie Griffiths-trained pair Family Crest and Gail.
