Kelinni Books Sydney Cup Berth With 2013 JRA Plate Win

Kelinni has booked himself a spot in the Group 1 Sydney Cup next weekend after winning the Listed JRA Plate at Royal Randwick.

The Refuse To Bend gelding won the race by more than a length ahead of second place-getter Fibrillation, while Pirate Bay rounded out the placings in third.

Kelinni was paying odds of $5 at to win today’s Japan Racing Association Plate.

The five-year-old will now take his place in the $500,000 Sydney Cup over 3,200 metres at the same track in seven days’ time.

Trainer Chris Waller was happy with Kelinni’s progress going into the 2013 Sydney Cup and feels that today’s run will set him up nicely.

“The timing has been good for a Sydney Cup,” Waller said.

“I want to make sure he’s not one behind in the Sydney Cup.”

The trainer does not believe the seven day back-up will prove too much for Kelinni based on his spring carnival campaign where he won the Lexus Stakes before placing a gallant fourth in the Melbourne Cup four days later.

“He’s backed up within four days and run fourth in the Melbourne Cup,” Waller said.

Nash Rawiller steered Kelinni to victory in the 2013 JRA Plate, however, will face off against the galloper when he rides Julienas in the 2013 Sydney Cup next Saturday.

“Today’s a nice top off for him,” Rawiller said of Kelinni.

“I don’t think it’ll hurt him at all.”

Rawiller admitted that there wasn’t any proven reason for Julienas’ last placing in the Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap last start.

“I couldn’t pick a lot out,” he said.

“It’s quite possible he just pulled up a little bit tight in his back.”
