The countdown to the 2013 Doncaster Mile (1600m) is nearly over, one of the premier events of the 2013 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
Due to jump as race 8 at 4:15pm at Randwick on Saturday, the Doncaster boasts a bumper 20-horse field that includes 13 individual Group 1 winners.
Heading the market for the $2 million race is glamour colt Pierro who is considered a $2.50 chance at bookmaker.com.au.
Only two other horses fall under double figures, with three-year-old filly Norzita at $8.50 and Appearance a $9.50 chance.
Last year’s runner-up Shoot Out ($15) has a tough ask to carry 58kg but is a proven top-line performer while Solzhenitsyn ($17), Ethiopia ($17), Streama ($17) are all class horses.
There’s also plenty of quality horses at big odds including Secret Admirer ($26), Red Tracer ($26), Happy Trails ($26) and Glass Harmonium ($41).
Not sure who to back in this time-honoured race full of big chances? Don’t worry, keep reading as the Races.com.au team are to help with our Doncaster Mile tips.
#11 Appearance $9.50
This mare has been well backed from $13 into $9.50 and we think for good reason. The Guy Walter stable is flying and none are going better than Appearance. Chases a third straight Group 1 here after taking out the Coolmore Classic and the Queen Of The Turf Stakes. Last year’s winner More Joyous won the Queen Of The Turf in the lead-up so it’s a proven path. A two-time winner at the distance, seems to know where the line is and knows how to get the bob of the head. Gets in just 0.5kg above the minimum with 53.5kg and has won in all conditions.
#2 Pierro $2.50
While we think the 57kg makes him slightly vulnerable and aren’t tipping him to win, it is tough to ignore Sydney’s number one colt. If anyone can break the metric weight-carrying record for three-year-olds, it’s him. Chases a fourth consecutive win here and his sixth Group 1. Two-time winner at the mile and unbeaten from three starts at the track. Ideally drawn in barrier four.
#12 Red Tracer $26
Awkwardly drawn in the outside barrier but a very consistent mare. From 26 starts she’s finished in the top three 21 times for 10 wins and 11 minor placings. Coming off consecutive seconds to Appearance in Group 1s and has finished in the top two in four starts this preparation. A successful performer on good and dead tracks but absolutely swims in the wet so any rain will help her chances.
