Sydney Cup Favourite Kelinni Heads 2013 JRA Plate Field

2013 Sydney Cup favourite Kelinni will have a final tune-up for Saturday week’s staying test in Saturday’s Listed 2013 JRA Plate (2000m) at Randwick.

The import heads a full field of 14 plus four emergencies where he will carry the topweight of 60kg.

Trainer Chris Waller said the five-year-old needs the run ahead of the 3200m Sydney Cup.

“He has just been one run behind all preparation which is through him coming back as a stronger horse, he came back a lot heavier,” Waller told TVN.

“I can’t see running on Saturday taking away his chances in the Sydney Cup, I think it will top him off nicely.”

After running fourth in the Melbourne Cup during the spring, Kelinni has only been solid this autumn but showed promising signs when fourth in the BMW.

He is one of of four Waller-trained runners in the JRA Cup field, joined by Hoylonny, Said Com and Lunayir.

Among the gelding’s main rivals on Saturday are mares Crafty Irna and Fibrillation who are both consistent performers at black-type level.

Heading into the race in good form but stepping up in class is Tony McEvoy’s French import Sysmo.

The lightly-raced gelding is coming off a mid-week win at Canterbury which was preceded by a second at Bendigo. He gets in with the minimum weight of 54kg.

Also in the field is Doncaster emergency Strike The Stars who is coming off a fifth-place finish to Lights Of Heaven in the Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes.

Others in the JRA Plate field include Wyong-based veteran Gazza Guru, Kris Lees’ import Pirate Bay and Craig Carmody-trained gelding Single.
