Moreish Heads 2013 WATC Derby Field

Sharon Miller’s flying WA Oaks winning filly Moreish is the headline acceptor for the WATC Derby 2013 at Ascot Racecourse in Perth this Saturday, the youngster vying for their fourth win on the trot.

Set to run as Ascot Race 7 at 4:15pm (local time) the $400,000 Group 2 Schweppes W.A.T.C. Derby (2400m) has drawn a full field of 16 three-year-olds this year with Moreish the likely favourite.

Draw in in gate 10 with regular rider Troy Turner staying on the daughter of More Than Ready has won her last three races, all at stakes level, consecutively most recently putting an easy two lengths on her closest rival in the Group 3 W.A. Oaks over the same track and distance on April 6.

Also set to back up from the WA Oaks is third placed Blackfriars filly Pants On Friar prepared by Lou and Dion Luciani, the stables also represented in the race by recent Bunbury winner Ye Olde (barrier 11).

Along with Moreish the only other last start winner in the WATC Derby this year is then the Daniel Morton-trained Strada gelding Gold Broker in gate six with William Pike to ride who took out the Listed Melvista Stakes (2200m) at the track two weeks ago.

Morton has also accepted for Coughlin’s Law who ran sixth behind their better fancied stablemate in the Melvista.

Other notable WATC Derby hopes then include Darren McAuliffe’s well performing Snippetson gelding Rebelson coming off a Melvista fourth, Melvista third placed Trading Day, and Mystic Prince who will be ridden by Melbourne-based jockey Ben Melham from gate four.

Melham, 25, will also be riding the John Sadler-trained Karrakatta Plate winner Ms Funovits in the Group 3 WA Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at the WATC Derby Day meeting.

Reset gelding Mystic Prince is usually ridden by top local hoop William Pike but Pike has decided to partner with WATC Derby rival Gold Broker.
