Latest Sydney Cup 2013 Odds – Kelinni & Maluckyday Co-Favourites

After a failed run by former favourite Julienas at Randwick last weekend Chris Waller’s talented stayer Kelinni has firmed into co-favouritism for Saturday week’s 2013 Sydney Cup with Maluckyday.

Only a week ago punters could get Waller’s Refuse To Bend five-year-old Kelinni, winner of the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) last spring before their brave fourth in the iconic Melbourne Cup over the two miles, for as long as $11 to win the $500,000 Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday April 27 at the end of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

After coming within one and a quarter lengths in the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill on April 6 behind Fiveandahalfstar in a dominant run, and the disappointing run by former top fancy Julienas last weekend however Kelinni now tops the Sydney Cup odds.

Gai Waterhouse’s Cape Cross six-year-old Julienas was dominating Sydney Cup betting at $5 after they won back-to-back stakes races in Sydney including the Listed NE Manion Cup (2400m) last month.

Julienas however failed to run on in the Group 2 Chairman’s Quality (2600m) last Saturday dropping right out of the race to eventually cross over 35 lengths away last behind Tremec in the Sydney Cup lead-up.

A trial this Friday will determine whether they press onto the Sydney Cup but they have eased in betting out to $11.

Kelinni meanwhile, who defeated Julienas in the Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality (2400m) during the spring, has firmed in from $11 to $5 a price they now share with fellow market mover Maluckyday ($8 into $5) from the Hawkes family stables who ran a close sixth in The BMW.

Another horse that previously sat second in the Sydney Cup markets at $8 with Maluckyday, It’s A Dundeel, has been removed from the markets with connections of the ace Kiwi galloper opting not to head for the two mile classic following their stunning completion of the Autumn 3YO Triple Crown with a big six length win in the Australian Derby over the weekend.

The crack High Chaparral colt will instead target the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on Sydney Cup Day.

Robert Hickmott’s impressive Australian Cup third placegetter Tanby meanwhile is now the $10 third favourite before Julienas joins surprise Chairman’s Quality runner-up Blood Brotha from NZ and Peter Moody’s Reset four-year-old Vatuvei at $11.

Other stayers high up the markets then include Chairman’s winner Tremec ($13), defending Sydney Cup winner Niwot ($14) and the Kerry Parker-trained Snitzel mare Aliyana Tilde ($15) who was an eye-catching third in the Chairman’s last weekend.

See below for the latest Top 15 chances for the Sydney Cup, markets to undergo an update following this Saturday’s Doncaster Mile Day with Kelinni to run in the $100,000 Listed JRA Plate (2000m).
