This Saturday a talented line-up of two-year-olds will vie for top honours in the W.A. Sires’ Produce Stakes 2013, the juveniles’ feature running as one of two Group features at Perth’s Ascot Racecourse.
Due to run as Ascot Race 6 at 3:40pm (local time) this year’s $200,000 Group 3 W.A. Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) has drawn a final field of 15 hopefuls John Sadler’s Victorian-trained filly Ms Funovits likely to jump favourite despite her horror barrier draw.
Coming up with the visitor’s draw 15 of 15 the Reset filly is undefeated having won her debut at Flemington back in January before travelling to WA for the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) at Ascot on April 6.
Ridden by Glen Boss, who will be replaced by Ben Melham in the Sires Produce, Ms Funovits overcame barrier 11 of 16 for her Karrakatta Plate victory and could prove hard to beat again this Saturday if she handles the wide gate again like connections believe she will.
“We were hoping to draw around six,” managing co-owner Phil Sly told the West Australian.
“She has gone ahead in absolute leaps and bounds.
“If you’ve got the best horse in the race does it really matter about the barrier? Is she one of the best in the field? I think she is.
“John (Sadler) has done his job, it is up to Ben now. Bossy got her from 11 to be travelling one off the leader within 200 metres last start.
“All the good horses can do it.”
To wear the number one saddlecloth from barrier eight is then the Steve Wolfe-trained Trichologist who comes off a second to Ms Funovits in the Karrakatta Plate, the War Pass gelding having won two of their five starts to date.
Also coming through the Karrakatta Plate is third placed Camporella, Dan Morton’s local Exceed And Excel filly having previously won her three consecutive runs this preparation.
Camporella was the big winner in the WA Sires’ Produce Stakes barrier draw coming up trumps with the inside alley which she will appreciate after drawing gate nine in the Karrakatta Plate.
Her previous wins this time in came in the Magic Millions Plate, the lucrative Magic Millions 2YO Classic and then the Listed Gimcrack Stakes all over 1100m at Ascot.
Morton will also be represented in the Sires by Blackfriars gelding Low Tide (barrier 14) who won at the track and distance two back and Trade Fair filly Yaloginda (barrier 11).
Other notable hopes then include the Paula Wagg-trained Balmont Girl and Husson Lightning gelding Diversicolor who finished a close one-two in a Westspeed Nursery Handicap over the 1100m here on April 10.
