Pierro Receives Favourable 2013 Doncaster Mile Barrier Draw

Raging 2013 Doncaster Mile favourite Pierro has received an early favour ahead of Saturday’s $2 million race, drawing an ideal barrier four position.

The glamour colt was being offered at $2.20 before markets closed prior to the barrier draw and is now well and truly in the box seat.

Pierro will chase a fourth straight win this weekend but still has to overcome a piece of history.

With an allocation of 57kg, the son of Lonhro will have to break a three-year-old metric weight-carrying record, set by Tontonan who lugged 56kg to victory in 1974.

Owner Greg Kolivos admits it is a challenge to step up with a big weight in a handicap but was pleased with the barrier four draw.

“You take all the favours you can get, very happy with it [barrier four],” Kolivos said.

“There’s a race here, it’s a great race and why not let him have a crack?”

Last year’s runner-up Shoot Out, who will carry the topweight of 58kg, will come from barrier 10, the same barrier stablemate Rangirangdoo won from in 2010.

The six-year-old Chris Waller-trained gelding has been in strong lead-up form, winning the Chipping Norton Stakes and finishing third to Pierro in the George Ryder Stakes.

Waller said the topweight provides a challenge but take confidence from his stable star’s form at both the track and distance.

Shoot Out is a four-time winner at the distance and two of those wins have come at Randwick.

“The Randwick form plus his mile form is close to the best in the race,” Waller said.

“Like Pierro he’s got the weight barrier to overcome but that should ensure a great race.”

Shoot Out is part of a Waller-trained quartet in the Doncaster, joined by nine-year-old veteran Danleigh (15), consistent mare Red Tracer (21) and Sacred Falls (6).

Bart Cummings-trained filly Norzita is among the top betting chances but will have to overcome an early hurdle after drawing barrier 17.

Heading into the race in terrific form is Appearance who has drawn barrier 13 for her attempt claim a third consecutive Group 1 win.

The Darley-owned mare is coming off wins in both the Coolmore Classic and the Queen Of The Turf Stakes.

Other barriers of note include Queensland gelding Solzhenitsyn (2), Emirates Stakes winner Happy Trails (14) and Newmarket Handicap third Aeronautical (1).

The Doncaster market will be open shortly and the best place to back a winner is bookmaker.com.au.

The preferred bookie of Races.com.au is fully Australian owned and has an autumn special of a $500 bonus bet available for new customers who sign up quoting the code BONUSBET!
