20-Horse 2013 Doncaster Mile Field Released

A capacity 20-horse field plus one emergency has been announced to contest Saturday’s prestigious $1.5 million 2013 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick.

Headed by superstar colt Pierro, the Doncaster field is littered with Group 1 winners which should ensure an exciting race this weekend.

With last year’s winner More Joyous (59.5kg) and star import Manighar (58kg) not among the acceptors, weights have to be raised which will see Shoot Out carry the topweight of 58kg.

It also sees Pierro’s weight rise to 57kg, meaning he will have to break the metric weight-carrying record for three-year-olds in the race.

Tontonan carried 56kg as a three-year-old to win the race in 1974.

There is no shortage of form horses in the field and also a strong female presence, with the likes of Norzita, Appearance and Red Tracer all coming off big performances.

Appearance will be chasing a third straight Group 1 after winning the Coolmore Classic and the Queen Of The Turf Stakes while Norzita was last seen winning the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes.

Consistent mare Red Tracer will relish an expected damp track and is coming off consecutive seconds behind Appearance.

Group 1 winners Solzhenitsyn and Happy Trails will both appreciate a drop in the weights after struggling at weight-for-age level in the George Ryder last start.

One of the more interesting runners in the field is Ethiopia who will be running for the first time since injuring himself and limping home for last in the Melbourne Cup.

It will be the four-year-olds first start in Sydney since storming home from last to win the Australian Derby in April.

Also in the field are Glass Harmonium, Veyron, Danleigh, Secret Admirer, Lightinthenite, Lamasery, Streama, Monton, Alma’s Fury, Fontelina, Sacred Falls and Aeronautical.

Anthony Cummings-trained gelding Strike The Stars is the emergency.

The barrier draw for the Doncaster will take place later today.
