Sydney Cup 2013 Next for Chairman’s Quality Winner Tremec

Saturday week’s 2013 Sydney Cup is shaping up as an achievable target for John Thompson’s progressive stayer Tremec after their win in the $175,000 Group 2 Schweppes Chairman’s Quality (2600m) at Royal Randwick’s Australian Derby Day.

The Zabeel four-year-old made it two-from-two leading up to the $500,000 Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) back at the track on the 27th with a strong effort over a quality field with today’s Chairman’s Quality victory coming a month after their tight victory in the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2200m) at Warwick Farm.

Relishing the step up in distance the known barrier rouge had no troubles with the gates today and was able to settle into a sweet position with jockey Craig Newitt trailing Gai Waterhouse’s Sydney Cup favourite Julienas who took up the early lead.

The heavily-backed favourite Hathras worked one off the rail to settle down in second while Tremec was third.

Hathra’s jockey Jim Cassidy put the pressure on the leader and went up to take the lead on the fence with about 1200m left to travel, Kris Lees’ promising German import let roll.

Heading onto the straight Julienas dropped right out and was beaten before the turn eventually finishing a worrying 36 lengths away last before Hathras ($2.40) too fell out of contention as the others made their moves including the $101 roughie of the pick Blood Brotha who swept up on the outside coming around them in a big late run.

Tremec moved up to hit the lead on the inside over the final few hundred meters with seven-year-old Kiwi veteran Blood Brotha, last year’s New Zealand Cup winner by six and a half lengths over the two miles, fighting for the front out wide.

In the end Tremec proved the better stayer and won as a $31 shot a long neck ahead of Blood Brotha in a lucrative Chairman’s Quality Quinella, Kerry Parker’s last start Group 3 Epona Stakes winning Snitzel mare Aliyana Tilde ($14) a good third a further one and a half lengths away.

While Hathras failed to finish off they are still learning in their first prep down under and are tipped for big improvement and one to watch in the upcoming Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival staying features.

It was all credit to the John Thompson-trained Chairman’s Quality winner, who is a distant relative of 2000 Melbourne Cup winner Brew, however who overcame their barrier troubles to run the ideal Sydney Cup lead-up.

“The team’s done a great job,” Thompson said after the win.

“Full credit to the horse.

“I think he’s a very promising stayer.”

Looking ahead to the increased distance of the Sydney Cup, Newitt’s comments on their Derby Day run should have installed confidence they will handle the step up.

“He’s pretty one paced,” Newitt said.

“We followed Gai’s horse (Julienas) and they put him into the race nice.

“He showed a good turn of foot (at the end).

“He’d have gone another lap if I’d asked him to.

“His biggest hurdle’s the barriers but today he was on his best behavior and he got the job done well.”
