Today Sydney’s newly refurbished Royal Randwick Racecourse will be host to one of the year’s biggest race days with 2013 Australian Derby Day – betting tips on the nine bumper races including Black Caviarin the last detailed below.
Racing kicks off today at 11:55am (AEST) with the $125,000 Group 3 Ticketek Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) for the two-year-olds where Golden Slipper emergency Il Cavallo will get their chance for a consolation prize.
It is a cracker nine race line-up today too with the action continuing right through until 5:10pm (AEST) where it is all about the number nine in the ninth, Black Caviar out for her incredible 25th straight career win in the $1 million Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m).
While it really is all about Black Caviar today there’s still two other Group 1 races on the program and two other odds-on favourites for the punters to rally behind.
The first is last Saturday’s Golden Slipper winner Overreach in Race 5 at 2:30pm (AEST), the superstar filly out for the second leg of the autumn 2YO triple crown stepping up in distance for the $500,000 Group 1 Inglis Sires Produce Stakes (1400m).
The day’s official namesake event then runs as Race 7 at 3:50pm (AEST) with a 10-horse field of three-year-olds facing off in the $1.5 million Group 1 David Jones Australian Derby (2400m) where the flying It’s A Dundeel is set to start the shortest priced favourite in 25 years following their successful Randwick – Rosehill Guineas double.
With so many shorties in the markets punters then will be looking to the exotics and the support races on the card for value.
So to help you clean up and enjoy a profitable Derby Day 2013 below are the Races.com.au insider tips on all nine Randwick races today which you can lock in right now at bookmaker.com.au – home of the famous $500 bonus sign-up bet this autumn!
2013 Australian Derby Day Betting Tips
Race 1 (11:55am) – $125,000 Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m)
- #6 Il Cavallo ($1.80) from #1 Iconic ($17) and #2 Safeguard ($3.40)
Sticking with the Peter Moody-trained favourite Il Cavallo whose connections fancied them good enough for a Slipper late entry. They failed to gain a start in that and this is easy killings from barrier one. Iconic great value at $17 having won their last two including the Bendigo Gold Rush and Safeguard resumes here having won on debut at Flemignton.
Race 2 (12:30pm) – $125,000 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m)
- #1 Tatra ($4.20) from #5 Flying Snitzel ($4.60) and #2 Toydini ($3)

Race 3 (1:10pm) – $125,000 Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m)
- #1 Royal Descent ($7) from #3 Unimpeachable ($3.80) and Hold Me Tight ($11)
Royal Descent has the big weight here but is a classy looking filly having just been beaten in the Group 3 Keith Nolan last start. She needs to handle the 59kg but should be able to do that and get the distance. Unimpeachable has the right weight for this while Hold Me Tight was third in her last two runs at Doomben stepping up in class today.
Race 4 (1:50pm) – $175,000 Group 3 Chairman’s Quality (2600m)
- #2 Julienas ($4) from #4 Permit ($9) and #6 Vatuvei ($12)
Check out why 2013 Sydney Cup favourite Julienas is our pick in the Chairman’s Handicap 2013 Betting Tips.
Race 5 (2:30pm) – $500,000 Group 1 Inglis Sires Produce Stakes (1400m)
- #7 Overreach ($1.55) from #8 Guelph ($10) and #11 Shahad ($26)
Read why we are sticking with the Golden Slipper winner in our 2013 Inglis Sires Produce Stakes Betting Tips.
Race 6 (3:10pm) – $125,000 Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1600m)
- #4 Havana Rey ($6) from #12 Moriarty ($13) and #9 Raspberries ($8.50)
Loved the all-the-way win by Havana Rey in a Group 2 at Rosehill over 1500m last time out, has a wide draw here but time and class to get across for their fourth win from five starts. Resuming Moriarty should be good fresh, won back-to-back races before the break including the Gosford Cup in January. Raspberries can improve third-up here with fitness on their side.
Race 7 (3:50pm) – $1.5 million Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m)
- #1 It’s A Dundeel ($1.25) from #3 Philippi ($7) and #8 Kingdoms ($61)
Find out why It’s A Dundeel is the shortest priced Derby favourite in a quarter of a century in our 2013 Australian Derby Tips article.
Race 8 (4:30pm) – $175,000 Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m)
- #1 Mrs Onassis ($17) from #6 Karuta Queen ($9) and #5 Arinosa ($4.60)
Fairly open market here and while they have the big weight (58.5kg) and were eighth last start, at $17 Mrs Onassis is the value pick of the day for us sure to appreciate the conditions of this more than the Challenge Stakes. Group 1 winner of the Oakleigh Plate first-up so has speed and class. Moody’s Karuta Queen is also well priced and the money is coming for her, second to her star stablemate Black Caviar in the William Reid. Favourite Arinosa comes off a win in the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes where she overcame gate 12 of 12 and beat a number of these.
Race 9 (5:10pm) – $1 million Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m)
- #9 Black Caviar ($1.12) from #2 Bel Sprinter ($9.50) and #1 Hay List ($26)
As if you need to really be told any more, but click on the link for why Black Caviar will continue the legend in our TJ Smith Stakes 2013 Tips.
