2013 Queensland Derby Target for Carbine Club Stakes Winner Toydini

The all-Group racing action of Australian Derby Day continued this afternoon with winning the progressive Guy Walter-trained Toydini winning the $125,000 Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) ahead of a possible tilt at the Queensland Derby 2013 in Brisbane in June.

While the season’s best staying three-year-olds are waiting to face off in the $1.5 million Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) running as Race 7 today, a smart line-up of the same age group contested this year’s edition of the Carbine Club Stakes with Bernardini gelding Toydini proving their potential as a galloper to watch.

Having undergone a gelding operation earlier this year the horse has come on well going from strength-to-strength.

After the jump Toydini and jockey Blake Shinn found themselves pushed back towards the tail end of the field with the race favourite Tatra kicking up to find the fence and take the lead over the likes of Lunar Rise and Flying Snitzel.

Toydini meanwhile was third last one off the rails until Shinn was forced to make an early move and put them into the race before hitting the turn for home.

The eventual winner moved up very fast on the outside starting to put pressure on the front runners probably a little before Shinn ideally would have liked.

But the hoop need not have worried because he had a class horse under him with plenty in the tank, Toydini ($4.20) doing it easy in the end pulling away for their second comprehensive victory on the trot following a 2.5 length effort in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) second-up last month.

In a head-bobber for the minor placings the Chris Waller-trained Hawkspur ($18) having their maiden black type start was able to get into second just ahead of the brave Bradman ($21) in a juicy trifecta result.

It was a wonderful winning performance by Toydini in the Carbine Club Stakes, the star in the making getting to the front a long way out but they didn’t lose any steam and the future looks bright.

“He showed his adaptability today,” Walter said.

“The pace wasn’t as strong as we would have liked.

“It was a great piece of riding (from Shinn)

“And he had the horse under him to do so.

“He’s really going somewhere.”

Having stepped up to the 1600m, which they also ran fourth over behind Sizzling as a two-year-old in the Group 1 TJ Smith (1600m) at Eagle Farm last winter, Walter is now considering a trip back to the sunshine state this mid-year carnival for the $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) on June 8.

“He was very impressive,” the trainer said.

“We’re thinking about maybe the Queensland Derby but we’ll just take him a race at a time.”

Shinn agrees that the horse is a star-in-the-making, thrilled with their effort in the Carbine against some top rivals.

“I respected Lunar Rise and Tatra off their last runs,” Shinn said after the win.

“But he was just a class above them.

“I respected Tatra because of their form around (Australian Derby favourite) It’s A Dundeel.

“I had to put him into the race (a little early).

“But once I got there I knew I had the race sewn up.

“He’s a very classy horse and it’s great for the stables, great for the owners and it’s onwards and upwards with him.”

One of those connections is owner-breeder Robert Bergstrom who believed they should have been much shorter than their drifting price on course.

“He’s the best horse we’ve ever bred,” he said.

“That was the secret (gelding him), to get his mind on the job.

“He should have been odds-on.”
