After pulling up from her classy Golden Slipper success last Saturday in excellent order, Gai Waterhouse’s ace filly Overreach will back-up this weekend as the odds-on favourite for the ATC Sires Produce Stakes 2013.
Betting on the $500,000 Group 1 Inglis Sires Produce Stakes (1400m), set to run as Australian Derby Day Race 5 at 2:30pm at Royal Randwick, is then unsurprisingly dominated by the Exceed And Excel two-year-old.
Sitting at a current quote of $1.60 in the ATC Sires Produce Stakes odds, Overreach had drawn nicely in barrier six in the 13-horse field with her Golden Slipper winning jockey Tommy Berry back in the saddle.
Waterhouse is supremely confident too that Overreach will follow in the footstep of her last Golden Slipper winner Pierro who 12 months ago took out the Sydney Autumn 2YO Triple Crown having watched her worked the house down at Randwick this week.
“Gai was going to wait until Thursday to decide whether she would run but she had made up her mind on Monday,” Berry said.
“It is the best she has pulled up from a run. She is really fit and most horses pull up better from a race when they’re fit.”
If successful Overreach will be Waterhouse’s eighth Sires Produce winner since 2000 and the fourth to secure the Golden Slipper – Sires Produce double joining Pierro (2012), Sebring (2008) and Dance Hero (2004).
There are no other two-year-olds under double-figures in the ATC Sires Produce Stakes markets with the next best fancied being the fellow Waterhouse-trained Florid Affair at $10 who has also drawn well in gate three.
The Sebring filly has had two runs to date the most recent being a smart 4.5 length victory over Artistic Lass over 1250m on a Slow (6) track at Warwick farm at the start of the month.
Two others then occupy the third line of betting with the Peter Snowden-trained Golden Slipper fourth placed Guelph (barrier 13) and dual stakes winner Villa Verde (barrier 9) both paying $11 to turn the tables on Overreach.
Others at even longer odds out for a massive upset then include the Peter Moody-trained High Chaparral colt So Man Up ($16) who has had just the one run when winning on debut at Cranbourne on March 28, Gerald Ryan’s Charlie Boy ($26) and Magic Night Stakes winner Scandiva ($26) after her third on the trot.
