Promising gelding Carmora will begin his path towards June’s Group 1 2013 Queensland Derby (2400m) when he lines up in the Listed 2013 Queensland Day Plate (1350m) at Doomben on Saturday.
The Desleigh Forster-trained galloper is resuming from a brief freshen-up after excelling in three starts since debuting in February.
The son of Stromberg Carlson is unbeaten and Forster is confident he can continue to improve on his way to the Derby on June 8.
“I think he’ll run well but whatever he does on Saturday he’s going to improve a lot,” Forster told Racing QLD.
“I’m really happy with the way he’s going and his work has been very good.
“He’s quite adaptable and is a big horse just starting to put it all together…his last win was very good and he did it at both ends.”
Carmora is set to have a steady build-up to the major goal of the Derby, tackling tradtional lead-up events on his way to the Winter Carnival’s biggest three-year-old race.
He will run in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic on April 27 before heading to the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) on May 11.
The three-year-old will face 14 rivals in the Queensland Day Plate this Saturday in a field that includes the Team Hawkes-trained Ninth Legion.
Whether or not the Golden Rose fourth placegetter lines up is still to be decided as he is also nominated for the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes at Rosehill.
Forster sees the in-form colt as the biggest threat to ending her charge’s unbeaten streak this weekend.
“It will be interesting to see where he starts,” Forster said.
Others in the field include former Darley galloper Narcissus and Lindsay Gough’s gelding It’s On The Pocket who is chasing a fourth straight win.
