Guy Walter’s in-form gelding Toydini is the clear favourite for the Group 3 2013 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) which will take place as part of the bumper Derby Day card at Randwick on Saturday.
The emerging galloper is a $3 chance at bookmaker.com.au as he looks to back up his 2 1/2 length win in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes last month.
Toydini has shown clear improvement since being gelded after an inconsistent start to his career.
Second favourite at $4.80 is Gerald Ryan-trained filly Flying Snitzel who beat Norzita in the Group 2 Kewney stakes last month but will have to bounce back from a disappointing eighth in the Coolmore Classic.
Ninth Legion occupies the third line of betting at $5 and has shown strong form since joining Team Hawkes from Anthony Cummings.
The Golden Rose fourth placegetter is yet to finish outside the top four in four starts under Hawkes. He is coming off consecutive seconds in the Bendigo Guineas and the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes.
Following closely is Tatra ($6) who has been in solid form. The Darley-owned colt was third to It’s A Dundeel in both the Randwick Guineas and the Rosehill Guineas.
The Hussonet colt has proven himself well and truly up to this level, winning the Group 2 Sandown Guineas in the spring.
Also under double figures is Sandown Guineas runner-up Lunar Rise who is at $9 but has struggled so far this spring.
The Starcraft gelding was 10th first-up at Flemington before running fourth at Kembla Grange last month.
Others in the Carbine Club Stakes market include Darley’s Proverb ($10), Chris Waller-trained gelding Hawkspur ($15), Bendigo Guineas winner Bradman ($26) and long-shot outsiders Honorius ($51) and Diamond Costa ($201).
