Arinosa Heads Sapphire Stakes 2013 Odds

Chris Waller’s in-form grey mare Arinosa has opened top of the 2013 Sapphire Stakes odds for the females-only Australian Derby Day feature at Randwick Racecourse this Saturday.

Due to jump at 4:30pm (AEST) one run before Black Caviar brings the show to a close in the TJ Smith Stakes, this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Belvedere Sapphire Stakes (1200m) has drawn a super line-up of 18 hopefuls.

Drawn just better than midfield in barrier nine with Brenton Avdulla to ride is the flying favourite Arinosa, the Dash For Cash five-year-old paying $4.40 in the Sapphire Stakes betting markets.

Undefeated this time in Arinosa vies for her third win on the trot after a first-up victory in the Listed Wenona Girl Handicap (1200m) before her big last-start success over Shamal Wind in the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on March 30 when she overcame the far outside barrier 12 of 12.

Two runners are then installed as the equal $9 second favourites with Arinosa’s stablemate Dystopia and the Robert Smerdon-trained Shamal Wind who are drawn at opposite ends of the field with barriers 12 and two respectively.

Consistent Redoute’s Choice six-year-old Dystopia will be second-up for the season sure to relish the drop back in class following her resuming fourth to Bel Sprinter, considered the best chance to hand Black Caviar with her first loss this weekend, in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill.

Lightly-raced Dubawi filly Shamal Wind meanwhile has won three of her six starts so far and comes off a second to Arinosa when drawn in gate 10 for the Birthday Card Stakes.

It is a logjam in the markets from there with other notable chances at generous double-figure prices including Peter Moody’s William Reid Stakes runner-up Karuta Queen ($11), Myer Classic runner-up from the spring Soft Sand ($12), Peter Snowden’s Ad Valorem mare Detours ($12) and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Miss Stellabelle ($12) who was third in the Birthday Card Stakes.
