2013 RN Irwin Stakes Field & Barriers

This Saturday while Sydney’s Randwick Racecourse comes to life for Australian Derby Day featuring the mighty Black Caviar, over in Adelaide their autumn action is heating up with a double shot of Group racing including the RN Irwin Stakes 2013.

Set to run as Morphettville Race 7 at 4:10pm this year’s $115,000 Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) has drawn a full field of 16 starters plus two emergencies awaiting a withdrawal.

Always a keenly contested affair the sprint showdown is an important race on the calendar as it serves as the traditional lead-up to one of the state’s major Group 1 showdowns, the $500,000 Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) to run on May 11.

Of the 16 confirmed starters there’s just one last start winner in the mix with the Mick Price-trained Loveyamadly, bred from the same sire as Black Caviar (Bel Esprit), after their third win on the trot.

Drawn nicely in gate six with Dale Smith to ride the talented four-year-old mare has won four of her past five starts back home in Melbourne and makes her interstate debut here on the back of narrow victories over 1100m and 1200m at Flemington and Moonee Valley respectively last month.

The top-rated RN Irwin Stakes entry this year meanwhile is Dennis O’Leary’s veteran Fantastic Light seven-year-old Outlandish Lad who has suffered a disastrously wide barrier 16 draw.

Third in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley back in January the horse has a great record back home in South Australia having enjoyed a good win this time last year in the Group 3 DC McKay Stakes (1100m).

Other notable gallopers with outside gates to overcome include the resuming Conservatorium (17) who was last seen running a close second in the X’Mas Handicap over 1400m here back on Boxing Day, the Peter Moody-trained Justify That (15) and David Jolly’s ultra-consistent sprinter Avoid Lightning.

Four-year-old Blevic mare Avoid Lightning hasn’t finished worse than fourth in all 11 of her career starts to date, highlights of which include her Lightning Stakes win here last July, the WJ Adams Stakes victory at Caulfield in February and her last start second to Riziz in the Oakbank Stakes (1100m) on March 30.

Also in the mix are the likes of the David Bourne-trained Zamorar whose last five runs all produced black type placings in Melbourne, X’Mas Handicap winner Hidden Value and the Darren Weir-trained Platelet drawn ideally in barrier four.
