Slipper Emergency Il Cavallo Runs in 2013 Kindergarten Stakes Field

Peter Moody’s exciting juvenile Il Cavallo may have missed a start in last Saturday’s Golden Slipper despite connections paying the hefty $150,000 late entry but they get their chance for a consolation prize this weekend in the Kindergarten Stakes 2013 at Randwick.

The Choisir colt debuted at Sandown on March 27 and ran record time over the 900m to win, catching the eye of many and earning the late entry for the iconic Golden Slipper Stakes.

As the second emergency however the failed to gain a run and so return to the races for just the second time on Saturday for the $125,000 Group 3 Ticketek Kindergarten Stakes (1100m).

Kicking off the action of Australian Derby Day as Race 1 at 11:55am (AEST) this year’s Kindergarten Stakes has drawn a final field of nine promising two-year-olds, an impressive six of which come off a last start win.

Il Cavallo, to be ridden by Moody’s number one jockey Luke Nolen, is sure to start one of the fancies especially after coming up trumps with the inside alley.

Another in-form youngster out for another win is the Tony McEvoy-trained Iconic, to be ridden by Craig Williams from barrier nine, who has won their past two starts.

Sharing the same sire as this Saturday’s odds-on TJ Smith Stakes favourite Black Caviar, the Bel Esprit gelding was last seen taking out a 1000m sprint at Bendigo.

Other top fancies in the Kindergarten then include the Peter Snowden-trained Safeguard, Gai Waterhouse’s Startum grey Divine Calling, last start winner at the track and distance Zaba Zaba Doo and the super consistent Everage.

Drawn in gate three with Nathan Berry to ride, Craig Carmody’s Zizou filly Everage has had four starts to date for two wins and two second place finishes, the good wet-tracker’s most recent effort being a win at Canberra on a Heavy (8) track which could be to her advantage with Randwick currently in the Heavy range.
