Bumper 2013 Sapphire Stakes Field Released

A full field of 18 fillies and mares has been accepted for the Sapphire Stakes 2013 on Australian Derby Day at Randwick Racecourse this Saturday which was won 12 months ago by the ace Atlantic Jewel ahead of her Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) victory at Royal Randwick on Sydney Cup Day.

Set to run as Randwick Race 8 at 4:30pm (AEST) this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Belvedere Sapphire Stakes (1200m) features a number of smart types including the Peter Moody-trained Karuta Queen.

The former Canberra-trained Not A Single Doubt mare comes off a Group 1 second behind her star stablemate Black Caviar in the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley.

Karuta Queen was originally also nominated for the $1 million Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) on Saturday but Moody has opted for the easier Derby Day assignment as opposed to another run in with Black Caviar who will shoot for her 25th career win in the TJ.

A number of leading trainers will be represented in the Sapphire Stakes 2013 by multiple acceptors including Peter Snowden who has three chances.

Heading Snowden’s contingent is Commands four-year-old Altar who suffered a blow drawing a horror barrier 15 as she looks to improve on her last start fourth in the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill last month.

Snowden’s other runners are then the resuming Group 3 winner Detours also wide with gate 13 and Forfeiture on the rails with barrier one.

Chris Waller meanwhile will saddle-up two top chances with Hugh Bowman’s mount Dystopia who comes off a Group 1 fourth behind Bel Sprinter in The Galaxy and the in-form Arinosa who is after their third win on the trot having taken out the Wenona Girl Handicap and Birthday Card Stakes in her two most recent runs.

Other notable Sapphire Stakes 2013 contenders then include the Gerald Ryan-trained 58.5kg topweight Mrs Onassis, Satin Shoes out to improve on a distant 10th to Black Caviar in the Newmarket, Gai Waterhouse’s Birthday Card third placed Miss Stellabelle and the Robert Smerdon-trained Birthday Card runner-up Shamal Wind drawn ideally in gate two.
