Gai Waterhouse-trained import Julienas remains a clear favourite for the Group 1 2013 Sydney Cup (3200m) which will be run at Randwick on April 27.
The six-year-old heads the market at $5 after two strong wins this autumn in the Listed Sky High Stakes and the Listed NE Manion Cup.
Julienas will get the chance to make it three in a row this weekend when he joins a number of other Sydney Cup hopefuls in the Group 2 2013 Chairman’s Handicap (2600m) at Randwick.
Sharing the second line of Sydney Cup betting at $8 are star colt It’s A Dundeel and former Melbourne Cup runner-up Maluckyday.
But the It’s A Dundeel camp are yet to suggest they will head to the Sydney Cup, with the three-year-old chasing the third leg of the three-year-old triple crown in the Australian Derby on Saturday.
At $9.50 is New Zealand Sangster who was strong in the finish to run third in the BMW on Saturday.
Proven over the 3200m Sydney Cup distance when winning the Auckland Cup in March, Sangster has won six of 21 starts and collected more than $1.2 million in prizemoney.
Melbourne Cup fourth Kelinni is considered an $11 chance while the Lloyd Williams-owned Tanby is at $13.
Hathras remains a $16 chance despite failing in his first step up to Group 1 company in the BMW. Also at $16 are last year’s winner Niwot and Peter Moody-trained stayer Vatuvei ($16).
Moody has Melbourne Cup intentions with Vatuvei and he has shown his appreciation for a genuine staying trip in the past, winning the VRC St Leger (2800m) and the Moonee Valley Gold Cup.
Vatuvei will be given the chance to show he is up to class this weekend in the Chairman’s Handicap.
Others featuring in Sydney Cup betting include Gatewood ($21), Mourayan ($21), Permit ($21) and Lunayir ($26).
