The son of High Chaparral scored their maiden Group 1 victory in Sydney last spring in the Spring Champion Stakes over the 2000m at Randwick before coming back for a stellar autumn carnival.

After a first-up fourth to glamour colt Pierro in the Hobartville at Rosehill the gun youngster went on to score the Randwick Guineas – Rosehill Guineas double over 1600m and 2000m respectively.

Their most recent effort at Rosehill saw them post an emphatic seven lengths over their closest rival, expat New Zealand filly Sacred Falls – an effort Baker is hoping they can replicate on Saturday.

They step up to the mile and a half this weekend for the lucrative $1.5 million Group 1 ATC Australian Derby (2400m) which has drawn a final field of just 10 hopefuls.

It’s A Dundeel has drawn barrier eight and will be ridden by regular jockey James McDonald as they race over the distance for the first time since their disappointing seventh last Melbourne Cup Carnival over the 2500m in the Victoria Derby behind Fiveandahalfstar who has been ruled out of Saturday’s showdown with an injury.

The only other last-start winner in the mix for the Australian Derby this year is the Michael Kent-trained Philippi who came up trumps with barrier one – Luke Nolen to ride.

Host colt Philippi scored their fourth win from seven career starts last Saturday on Golden Slipper Day taking out the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) by an easy three lengths in the perfect Derby trial.

Other top chances then include Peter Gelagotis’ Alister Clark Stakes winner Hvasstan out to bounce back after their distant and disappointing seventh in the Rosehill Guineas, Gai Waterhouse’s Tulloch Stakes runner-up Hippopus who is expected to be competitive over the 2400m, and the Peter Snowden-trained Bernardini colt Solemn who failed to handle the soft track when 11th in the Tulloch.
