Habibi New 2013 Australian Oaks Betting Favourite

After a brave Vinery Stud Stakes third in their Australian debut, Donna and Dean Logan’s New Zealand Derby winner Habibi has been installed at the top of the Australian Oaks 2013 odds for Saturday week’s Royal Randwick showdown.

The talented Ekraar filly travelled down under for Golden Slipper Day on the back of a big win in the Group 1 NZ Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie in early March.

Their target was the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill and they put in a good run dropping back in distance on a Slow track to come within three and a half lengths of Bart Cummings’ classy winner Norzita.

Habibi is now on track to back up on April 20, Doncaster Mile Day, in the $550,000 Group 1 ATC Australian Oaks (2400m) for which they are now the early favourite of 71 nominated fillies.

Before her Vinery run Habibi was the $4.60 second pick in the futures Australian Oaks odds behind the Clarry Conners-trained Dear Demi at $4.

The Kiwi raider has leapfrogged up to top spot in the markets now however at $3.60 while last spring’s Crown Oaks winner Dear Demi is out to $4.80 after the daughter of Dehere ran fifth in the Vinery.

Despite her dominant Vinery Stud Stakes success Norzita won’t be backing up in the Australian Oaks 2013 with connections deciding to drop her back to the 1600m for the $2 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) Saturday week instead.

The now dual Group 1 winning Thorn Park filly is second pick in the latest Doncaster Mile odds behind Gai Waterhouse’s super Lonhro colt Pierro ($2.10) who enjoyed their fifth Group 1 victory over the weekend in the George Ryder Stakes.

The big Australian Oaks betting market mover meanwhile is John Thompson’s Casino Prince filly Longport who had her $21 price slashed to $10 now occupying the second line after her brave second in the Vinery Stud defeated less than half a length by Norzita.

Other top fancies for the Oaks then include Gerald Ryan’s recent Kewney Stakes winner Flying Snitzel, Zabeel three-year-old Gondokoro who ran a distant fourth in the Vinery and New Zealand Oaks winner More Than Sacred yet to run in Australia – all at $15.
