64 Nominations Taken For 2013 ATC Australian Derby

Fiveandahalfstar will back-up his last start The BMW win with a run in the 2013 ATC Australian Derby this Saturday April 13, 2013.

There are presently 64 nominations for the 2013 ATC Australian Derby and Fiveandahalfstar is the highest rated horse in the field, along with It’s A Dundeel.

Fiveandahalfstar has won four of his 20 race starts and has earned more than $2.57 million in prize money during his horse racing career.

The Hotel Grand gelding won the $2.25 million The BMW last Saturday after four second placings this autumn carnival.

Fiveandahalfstar, who is trained by Anthony Cummings, is expected to be once again ridden by jockey Hugh Bowman in the 2013 ATC Australian Derby.

It’s A Dundeel is also included in the 2013 ATC Australian Derby nominations.

The High Chaparral colt has won his last two autumn starts, with his most recent being by an incredible seven lengths in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas on March 30, 2013.

Prior to that, he won the Group 1 Royal Randwick Guineas against a quality field.

Jockey James McDonald believes that It’s A Dundeel will have no problems winning the 2013 ATC Australian Derby this weekend.

“Don’t get me wrong, Fiveandahalfstar will be awfully hard to beat on Saturday. So will Philippi. They’re two great stayers,” McDonald said.

“But It’s A Dundeel is the best horse I’ve ever ridden and he’ll only get better with racing.

“He will run the trip out and he’s got a great turn of foot – he can sprint like a miler.”
